The Half-Assed Realtor, An Oath

Kim is a half-assed Realtor? Who me?
If half-assed means:
- Having to put off prospecting to help a seller avoid foreclosure
- Not taking an over priced listing to later beat down the seller on price
- Serving clients where they are at financially able & capable
- Having to say “no” when I can’t help someone
Then that is me & it runs true to the oath I just took!
As you may know I started my real estate career working with my Mom. She is such a dynamo & a real sweetie. Seeing her in action, being a real person, & helping people truly inspired me to move forward in my career as a Realtor. Sometimes losing a sale or a referral because she refused to cut corners or overlook unethical practices is what really blew my mind. My idea of real estate agents was they were concerned about their commission more than helping people. I’m sure we’ve all experienced a salesperson like that, haven’t we?
At one time my Mom called me the “Reluctant Realtor” & many times I still have reluctance about being a Realtor. So their, I said it…I’M RELUCTANT & some times that can come across as half-assed in my commitment! This has always bothered me! I took this oath below & realized why I have been reluctant. Contrary to what all of the time management principles are, I took it! Am I crazy for doing so? Maybe, but at least I know I am feeling good about being of service to my clients & community.
See how this can be modified for your practice:
Do you solemnly swear that the following statements are true for you (most of the time, at least)?
1. “The clients I have today are far more important than the clients I hope to have tomorrow. I will never place my prospecting activities ahead of taking care of my current clients.”
2. “I will strive to never knowingly overprice my listings.”
3. “While every transaction is a learning experience, I promise not to use my clients as my teachers. If I am not qualified to handle a particular transaction, I will either refer to someone who is, or bring on someone to help me.”
4. “I promise to stay in touch with my sellers on a regular basis, keeping them updated on market activity, my own marketing efforts and showing feedback.”
5. “I commit to being a resource for my buyers and sellers by knowing reputable and reasonably-priced home improvement contractors and service providers.”
6. “I am, or intend to be, the best thing that could ever happen to my clients.”
This oath was taken directly from Jennifer Allan’s Selling With Soul Network that I am now happy to be a member of.
